Wendy Gauntlett-Shaw

Oil Painter and Sculptor

Born in Washington D.C., Wendy moved to California at a young age. After completing a degree in Art at Scripps College, Claremont, CA., a year study in Athens, Greece and working as an artist on an archeological dig, she worked in commercial art for ten years. Ms. Gauntlett-Shaw became an art director and a graphic designer while continuing to draw, paint and sculpt.

After her children were born, Wendy returned to producing fine art, while teaching art education in the schools. Showing her work in galleries in San Diego and participating in local and regional art festivals, Wendy has won several awards, most notable from the Del Mar Fair. The Don Diego “Best Three-Dimensional of Show” was awarded to her for her bronze sculpture, ‘Rebirth’, the San Diego award for her popular oil painting ‘Smiling Dogs’ from dog beach in Del Mar in and a first place for the painting ‘Orchid Chorus’. Collectors from San Diego to Washington D.C., as well as international clients have purchased Wendy’s work. She also takes commissions for landscapes or portraits in oils. One notable example being a bronze bust, installed at Stephens College, Missouri.

Wendy’s newest series is titled Relevant Women: Painting Women’s Spirit of Hope – A Global Reflection. These oils are portraits of women around the world as they are actively involved in the daily tasks of their lives, capturing their spirit of hope during a dramatic period of transition for women in human history.

Wendy enjoys plein-aire painting with oils and has focused in the San Diego area where she lives. She loves the intense colors and graceful shapes of the landscape, reflections in water, as well as the playful juxtaposition of objects in still lives. She has also been adding her love of the figure to her paintings of landscapes with people and dogs at the beach.
 
She is showing in various locations in San Diego , at the delicious Ki’s Restaurant in Cardiff and in the Offtrack Gallery in the Lumberyard in Encinitas, selling to the locals, as well as visitors from around the U.S. Wendy’s art reflects her enjoyment of the creative process and love for travel, highlighting hope for women and her enjoyment of nature.
